Some 19 people directly or indirectly took part in the two-minute killing mission, say police

The prime motive behind the assassination of prominent Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah was to undermine the progress he made regarding efforts to repatriate his people, police have said.

“Nineteen members of a local crime syndicate directly or indirectly took part in the targeted killing of Mohib Ullah on September 29. The killing squad that raided his office consisted of five armed individuals. The mission was over in two minutes,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Naimul Haque, commander of the Armed Police Battalion 14 (APBn).

SP Naimul disclosed the information at a press briefing held at his office Saturday afternoon after announcing the arrest of four members of the killing squad.

The arrestees Azizul Haque, Rashid Prakash Murshid Amin, Md Aanas, and Nur Mohammad were apprehended from the Iron Bridge area in Kutupalong Lambasia Rohingya camp under the Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar at around 4am on Saturday.

Upon interrogating the suspects, APBn learned detailed information in relation to the planning and execution of the attack.

According to their statement, the gang planned the assassination two days prior to the day of the attack. They held a meeting in the remote hills of Morgaz in Lambasia at 10pm on September 27.

There, they discussed how Mohib Ullah was quickly becoming an influential leader by playing a central role in the repatriation of Rohingyas.

So, they decided that he had to be stopped and made plans to assassinate him on September 29.

Mohib Ullah, the chairman of Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, had come to be known as a "voice for the Rohingya" in the Western media.

The teacher-turned-rights activist was one of the most high-profile advocates for the Rohingyas. He was invited to the White House and to speak to the UN Human Rights Council.

In the case filed over his murder, police had earlier arrested five people, one of whom already has given a confessional statement to a magistrate.

Meanwhile, just weeks into his murder, six Rohingya refugees were killed on Friday in an attack led by armed criminals at a madrasa in Balukhali Camp 18.

A gang armed with guns and sharp weapons attacked the madrasa before dawn and killed three teachers, two volunteers and a student, police said.

Over one million Rohingyas live in a cluster of camps in Cox’s Bazar, with most having fled Myanmar during a military crackdown in 2017.

The sprawling settlements have become increasingly violent, residents say, with armed gangs vying for power as well as kidnapping and murdering critics.
