Over 50 arrested so far in connection with the incident
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) claims to have arrested a key suspect in the recent arson attack on Hindu homes at a village in Rangpur’s Pirganj upazila.
The elite police unit is yet to disclose the suspect's identity, the charges brought or the specifics of the arrest, but said details will be made available to the media on Saturday.
Law enforcers have arrested more than 50 people so far over the incident, according to Pirganj police.
On the night of October 17, establishments belonging to members of the Hindu community were set on fire by a mob in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. Around 30 locals were injured at the time.
Police said tension erupted after some people alleged that a Hindu man had posted religiously abusive content on Facebook.
The attack took place after communal violence spread to some 20 districts in the past few days, triggered by allegations that the Holy Quran had been dishonoured at a Hindu temple during Durga Puja celebrations in Comilla.
At least seven people have been killed during attacks in Chandpur, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni and other areas.
