Police arrested 11 more people in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning in a case filed over the recent assault, vandalism and arson attack on homes, shops and temples of the Hindu community in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur.

So far 53 people have been arrested over this incident, confirmed Suresh Chandra, officer-in-charge of Pirganj police station.

He said they were arrested during the police drives that they conducted between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Among the 11 arrestees, two were apprehended from Dinajpur's Nawabganj, he added.

The judge however did not issue any order against the other three accused as they were underage.

The same day, the teenager who posted the status that reportedly sparked the arson attacks gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

After his statement was recorded, the same judge ordered that he be sent to jail.

Earlier on Monday night, he was arrested from Joypurhat's Panchbibi in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

On Sunday night, shops and temples belonging to members of the Hindu community were set on fire by a mob in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. Around 30 locals were injured at the time.

Police said tensions erupted after some people alleged that a Hindu man had posted religiously abusive content on Facebook.

The attacks took place after communal violence spread to 20 districts in the past few days, ignited by allegations that the Quran had been "dishonoured" at a Hindu temple during Durga Puja in Comilla.

At least six people have been killed during attacks in Chandpur, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni and other areas.
