Four people were killed in three separate incidents of drowning in Chittagong, Barisal and Jamalpur on Wednesday.

In Chittagong, a mother and son both drowned in a pond in Banshkhali upazila’s Puichari Union on Wednesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Mashruka Begum, 25, and her 14-month-old son Borhan Uddin, confirmed Banshkhali police OC Mohammad Kamal Uddin.

According to local security guard Nurul Haque, Mashruka Begum took her son Borhan to the pond to clean him around 10:30am.

The child suddenly fell into the water and the mother jumped after him, he said, adding that both of them drowned as neither knew how to swim.

According to Puichari Panel Chairman Moshammat Tanjim, the child’s grandfather saw his floating body in the pond when he came outside to look for his daughter-in-law and grandson.
