Vested groups trying to take advantage of recent incidents, say law enforcement agencies

There has been a steep rise in the spread of fake news, photos and videos on social media following the recent incidents of alleged desecration of the Holy Quran and the subsequent attacks on Durga Puja venues across the country.

A vested group is trying to take advantage of the situation to destabilize the law and order by spreading disinformation on social media, according to the country’s law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcers are taking legal action against those involved.

The Rapid Action Battalion on Wednesday detained a female college teacher for questioning as she had spread a deceptive video on Facebook to protest communal attacks.

Ruma Sarker, assistant professor of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, had uploaded a video of the murder of one Shahinuddin in Dhaka’s Pallabi, claiming it to be the footage of the murder of Jatan Kumar Saha, who died in a mob attack in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila on October 15, said a RAB official.

The video has been shared by many social media users in Bangladesh.

On Sunday, a Facebook ID named “Khushi” made a post in a group called “Geeta Paath” comprising 65,000 members claiming that a Muslim man named Rashedul Hasan, posing as a Hindu man, had recently vandalized a temple in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

A similar post was made in a group called “Amra Hindu Sanatani” on the same day.

Later, it was learned that the incident actually took place on February 28, 2019.

In a similar incident, miscreants have spread rumours on social media about the fire at a Hindu home in Panchagarh’s Debiganj upazila on Monday night, purporting it to be arson in order to incite communal violence.

The house owner, Parimal, himself later said that he had lit incense sticks to ripen bananas, which had accidentally caused the fire.

Earlier, another fake news was circulated on social media stating that miscreants had raped six people, including a child, following the attacks on Durga Puja mandaps in Chandpur’s Hajiganj on October 13.

Against the backdrop of such a tense situation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday urged the citizens of the country not to trust anything on social media without fact-checking.

Communal tension has gripped Bangladesh over the past few days following the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja venue on October 13 which triggered violence in two dozen districts.

Many have been arrested over the attacks and the spreading of communal hatred on social media during the largest festival of Hindus. Security was beefed up at places of worship and Border Guard Bangladesh troopers were dispatched to more than two dozen districts. The 10-day festival came to a close on Friday with the immersion of Durga idols.

Five people died as police opened fire during attacks on Puja venues in Chandpur's Hajiganj on October 13, and in Noakhali's Choumuhani, attacks on Hindu temples left two dead, including Jatan, on October 15.

The government and law enforcement agencies have described the incidents as well as the spreading of disinformation as attempts to destabilize the country.
