Home Minister: Prime suspect changing locations to evade police

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said authorities have identified the person behind the Comilla incident.
“I hope the prime suspect in the Comilla incident will be arrested soon … he has been changing locations frequently to avoid getting caught. We’ll be able to unfold the Cumilla incident once he’s arrested,” he said.
The home minister revealed the information while addressing a program on “Technological Modernization of RAB” held at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) headquarters on Tuesday.
Based on allegations of desecration of the Holy Quran at a puja mandap, violence broke out at several districts in Bangladesh during the Durga Puja celebrations.
Those who are trying to unleash communal violence and provoke people will be arrested soon, he said.
“We’ve seen some unpleasant incidents at puja mandaps this year and some people attempted to vandalize a temple in Chandpur centering the Cumilla incident. Police had to face trouble in bringing the situation under control. Four people died and another succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Tuesday morning,” said the home minister.
Besides, attempts were made to destabilize the situation in Ramu, Nasirnagar and Bhola by spreading rumours via social media, he said.
“A vested quarter is involved in spreading propaganda in the country by uploading video footage of many brutal incidents that took place in the country in different times, and in the past in the social media. These are condemnable and unfortunate,” he added.
Issuing a warning, the minister said those who are trying to benefit by spreading such rumours will be hunted down and punished.
Asaduzzaman urged people to control themselves after watching such incidents on Facebook, and refrain from doing anything out of provocation. “These are harmful and the Rangpur incident is an example.”
The home minister said a youth named Poritosh made an offensive remark on Facebook, and members of law enforcement agencies later arrested him.
“Poritosh’s house was guarded by police, that’s why his house was not attacked but rather, the neighbouring village was attacked instead. We have identified the attackers. Legal actions will be taken against them,” Kamal said.
“Centring the Comilla incident, Hindu worship places came under attack in Chandpur. As police struggled to control the mob, law enforcement had to open fire. Five people have died so far in Chandpur,” the minister said questioning why the perpetrators decided to carry out an attack in the first place.
The death toll rose to seven in the attacks on temples and Durga puja venues, as more two died in Noakhali.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to take action as soon as possible against those involved in the recent attacks in different parts of the country.
