The candidates names had been removed from the voters list
Two union parishad (UP) member aspirants in Bogra have been stripped of the chance to contest the upcoming polls as they were listed as dead in the Election Commission server.
Abdul Motaleb Ferdous, a councilor aspirant for Shahjahanpur upazila’s Aria municipality’s ward-2, will not be able to run in the polls as he has been removed from the voter list in addition to being shown as dead.
The UP polls are scheduled to be held at Shahjahanpur on November 28.
As part of the preparations, Abdul Motaleb went to register for the Covid-19 vaccine and verify his name in the voter list and found that he was listed as dead, said Motaleb’s son Rasel Ahmed.
Motaleb, a former UP member, had contested the polls last time as well and lost by 145 votes.
Motaleb claims the whole incident is a ploy by his competitor. According to the Shahajahan upazila Election Commission office, in order for someone to be listed as deceased in the commission server, the deceased’s family must inform the office of their death. After that, a field officer verifies the information after speaking to UP members and the chairman.
Further steps are taken based on the field officer’s report. Moreover, in order to remove someone from the voter’s list, his death certificate is required.
Shahjahan upazila Election Commission employee Dulal Hossain’s phone was found switched off despite attempts to contact him.
Previously, another UP member aspirant from Bogura’s Sonatala upazila found himself removed from the voter list.
The Sonatola UP elections are scheduled to be held on November 2 and nomination forms were released on October 4.
The candidate, retired army member Abul Kashem Sheikh, found himself listed as dead and removed from the voter list when he went to pick up the nomination form.
He said that he has been shown dead since 2011, and the commission office said that he will be unable to take part in the upcoming polls.
Expressing disappointment, Abul Kashem said that no one has yet been able to tell him when it can be corrected.
Meanwhile, Sonatala upazila Election Commission employee Ashraf Hossain said the correction can be made, but Kashem will not be able to take part in the upcoming polls.
Locals have heavily criticized the commission over the aspiring candidates missing the polls.
