They were arrested from Mirsarai and handed over to Hathazari police

Police have arrested three BNP leaders from different areas of Mirsarai in connection with a case filed over temple vandalism and violence in Hathazari of Chittagong on October 13.

They are Fakir Ahmed, 60, convener of Mirsarai municipality unit, Mohammad Zahid Hussain, 30, joint convener of the unit, and Nazrul Islam, 35, a local BNP leader.

Mirsarai police station Sub-Inspector Sayid Hossain said they were handed over to Hathazari police station on Monday afternoon.

Hathazari police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said a mob vandalized Hindu temples in Hathazari area on October 13 during a protest against the alleged defamation of the Quran in Comilla. The case was filed on October 14 against 200 named and unidentified persons.

The trio were sent to jail by a court on Monday.

JM Sen Hall attack case

A Chittagong court on Monday directed the police to interrogate 10 people, arrested on charges of attempting to attack the Puja Mandap of JM Sen Hall in the city on Friday, at the jail gate.

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman granted the police seven days to quiz the accused, rejecting the bail petitions, Kotwali police OC Nezam Uddin said.

The accused are Imran Majed Rahul, Md Hanif, Abdur Rahim, SM Yusuf, Amirul Islam, Md Salauddin, Atiqul Islam, Mohammad Shahid, Mohammad Shahjahan and Abdul Malek alias Manik.

“We will interrogate the arrestees at the jail gate. If necessary, we will apply to the court for further questioning,” the OC said.

Kotwali police SI Akash Mahmud Farid filed the case on Saturday against 84 named and 500 unidentified people.

Police have so far arrested 83 people after scrutinizing CCTV footage.

The accused were charged with obstruction of government work, assault on police, vandalism and insulting religious sentiments.

On October 15, a group of people took out a procession in protest against the Comilla incident and tried to attack the Puja venue at JM Sen Hall.

The Puja committee leaders allege that the attackers tore down the banner and threw stones at the pavilion. In protest, the Hindu devotees stopped the immersion of idols for about four hours.
