Madrasa students clash with Hindus at a village in Nabiganj upazila
At least 20 people, including a policeman, were injured on Thursday, when clashes broke out between madrasa students and Hindus at Durga Puja venue in Habiganj.
The incident was reported from a village at the northeastern district’s Nabiganj upazila, say police.
According to witnesses, students of a local madrasa in Kargaon Union’s Gumgumia village took out a procession with local youths protesting the alleged dishonour of Islam in Comilla during the puja.
As the procession reached the temple, the madrasa students got into an argument with the Hindu devotees and a clash erupted.
Soon after the police arrived at the scene and intervened to bring the situation under control, when Nabiganj police OC Dalim Ahmed was hit in the head.
He was admitted to Nabiganj hospital while two others with critically injuries were transferred to Sylhet for better treatment, said Inspector Aminul Islam.
Later, senior police officials and local administration officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control after discussing with both the parties.
Several units of RAB, police and detectives have been deployed in the village.
Nabiganj upazila administration chief (UNO) Sheikh Mohiuddin said the situation is normal now. Durga Puja activities are continuing in the puja mandap.
On Wednesday, communal tensions flared in Comilla over an alleged case of dishonouring the Quran amid Durga Puja, the largest Hindu festival. Crowds clashed with police and vandalized idols in the area.
Puja venues were also vandalized in Chandpur, Chittagong, Gazipur, Bandarban, Chapainawabganj, and Moulvibazar and clashes resulted in casualties.
