At least 20 others were injured
At least four people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash between supporters of two leaders over who would become the candidate in the upcoming second phase of Union Parishad (UP) election in Magura Sadar.
The incident took place at ward 3 of Jagdal union of the Sadar upazila on Friday evening, according to media reports.
The deceased are Rahman Mollah, 55, Sabuj Mollah, 52, Kabir Mollah, 50, and Imran Hossain, 25.
According to locals, the current UP member of ward 3 of Jagdal union is Nazrul Islam. However, in the upcoming UP election, Nazrul Islam’s political opponent was selected as the candidate.
This development created tension between the two sets of supporters, resulting in Friday’s clash.
Magura district Superintendent of Police Jahirul Islam said the injured were taken to Magura 250-bed Hospital.
Additional police were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control, he said.
Magura Sadar police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Alam said the bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy.
A case has been filed with Magura police station in this regard. No arrests have been made so far, the OC added.
