Department of Environment to take stern actions if they fail to comply with environmental guidelines
The Department of Environment (DoE) has slapped five companies with a fine totalling Tk18.25 lakh for causing damage to the environment in Chittagong.
Mohammad Nurullah Nuri, director of the Chittagong metropolitan DoE office, imposed the fines following a hearing on Wednesday.
Benz Industries Ltd, CSS Corporation Ltd and Islam Steel were fined Tk5.40 lakh each, while Popular Washing Factory and Haji Washing were fined Tk86,400 and Tk69,120, respectively.
According to the DoE, the five companies have been carrying out production activities without environmental clearance certificates for some time.
Earlier on Tuesday, DoE officials raided the Nasirabad area of Chittagong and served notices on the companies over pollution, discharge of untreated liquid waste and carrying out operations without clearance certificates.
Necessary steps would be taken to close down the companies if they did not start using air treatment plants and obtained environmental clearance certificates within a month, Nuri said.
