The accidents left one other injured
At least seven people died in separate road accidents in Tangail and Khulna Friday.
In Tangail, at least three people were killed and one other injured after a bus, truck and a covered van collided with each other in Kalihati upazila.
The incident took place on the Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway in Dhalatengar area of the upazila around 10:30am.
Two of the deceased were identified as Nurunnabi Mahfuz, 34 of Chittagong’s Bhojpur and Md Shahid, 35, of Joralganj upazila’s Kerhat union.
The identity of the other person killed in the incident could not be ascertained immediately.
Confirming the matter, Elenga Fire Service Station Officer Md Rasel said the accident happened as the vehicles were trying to overtake each other, killing one on spot. Three others critically injured were rushed to Tangail General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared two more dead.
Meanwhile in Khulna, at least four people were killed when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw plunged into a ditch after it was rammed by a sand-laden truck in Jilerdanga area of Dumuria upazila on the Khulna-Satkhira highway at around 1am.
After four hours, members of the local fire service station recovered the bodies of four people from the ditch at around 5 pm.
Two of the deceased were identified as Ilias Sardar, 45, of Sharafpur in Dumuria upazila and Reshma Khatun, 32, of Rudaghara village.
The identities of the remaining two victims, a man and a woman, were yet to be determined.
In the meantime, police arrested the truck’s driver Rakib Sheikh, confirmed Dumuria police station OC Obaidur Rahman.
After the accident, the traffic on Khulna-Satkhira highway was closed for 4 hours for rescue work. This disrupted traffic on both sides of the road which normalized after the rescue operation ended.
