The motive behind the murder was to take revenge after an argument over a game of Ludo, say police
A young man has been charged with murdering an eight-year-old boy over a game of “Ludu” (popular board game) at Shibchar in Madaripur.
The deceased was identified as Ratan Mollah, son of Jasim Mollah from Charkandi area of Taher Akon in Shibchar upazila.
His body was found near the Padma Bridge approach road area on Wednesday midnight.
Meanwhile, police arrested Mehedi Hasan, 19, after the victim’s father filed a murder case against him with the Shibchar police station on Wednesday morning.
He is also alleged to have attempted to murder another nine-year-old boy Manik (not his actual name) to cover up the initial murder.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Shibchar police OC Miraj Hossain said the accused confessed to his crimes upon preliminary interrogation.
According to police and local sources, Mehedi came to visit his grandparents in Charkandi village for a month. Occasionally he would play Ludu with Ratan and Manik next door.
On Tuesday, Mehedi and Ratan got into an argument over a game of Ludo, which angered the former to the point that he planned to kill the latter.
That afternoon, Mehedi took Ratan and Manik to the approach road area of the Padma Bridge. He then sent Manik to the shops to get some snacks and water.
When Manik left, Mehedi suffocated Ratan to death by wrapping a belt around his neck.
When Manik returned, Mehedi told him that Ratan had gone home and took him to the Banglabazar Ghat area where he tried to kill him similarly by wrapping an electrical wire around his neck. But, as Manik screamed for help, locals rushed to help him and Mehedi fled the scene.
Later that night, when Ratan’s family members began looking for him as he did not return home, Manik spoke out, leading to the arrest of Mehedi and the recovery of Ratan's body.
Ratan's mother Zarina Begum said: “Mehedi killed my precious child over such a small matter. I want justice, I want him to hang!”
Shibchar police OC Miraj Hossain said: “Mehedi lives with his family in a slum in Dhaka. He is a street urchin there. He came to his grandfather's house a month ago. Ratan's father Jasim Mollah has filed a murder case. Mehedi has been shown arrested in that case.”
