3 villages under river erosion threat in Patuakhali

The river erosion in the monsoon is more severe than at other times of the year

Three villages under Patuakhali district is under the threat of river erosion as two flood control embankments have been breached in the district’s Galachipa upazila.

Many organizations of the Dakua union of the upazila, the 200-year-old jomidar house, mosques, temples, the tomb of journalist leader Altaf Mahmud and many more are being washed away by the erosion of the Ramnabad river in the upazila. 

The intensity of river erosion in the monsoon is more severe than at other times of the year. If no action is taken in this regard, journalist Altaf’s grave will be flooded soon. 

According to locals, there are government-private projects worth Tk200 crore in Atkhali, Dakua and Hogolbunia villages of Dakuya union on the banks of the river.

Through the construction of carpeted paved roads over the flood control embankment in Galachipa upzila, road communication has been established from the upzila sadar to five unions of the upazila, Patuakhali sadar and Dashmina upazilas.

Galachipa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashish Kumar said he had informed the higher authorities to prevent the erosion of the villages affected by the Ramnabad river.

Hasanuzzaman, executive engineer of the Water Development Board in Patuakhali, assured to take necessary steps to prevent the river erosion, the UNO added.
