The accused videotaped the incident and threatened to leak it if not given Tk 900,000
Law enforcers have arrested three men, including a local Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) leader in connection to gang raping a newly married woman in Habiganj’s Lakhai.
The arrestees are Solaiman Hossain Rony, 22, a joint convener of BCL’s Lakhai unit, Mithu Mia, 21 and Shubho Mia, 19.
Police arrested Shubho on Thursday and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 arrested Rony and Mithu the same day, said Lakhai Police OC Saidul Islam.
The woman’s husband Rakib Ahmed filed a case against eight men with Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 on Thursday.
According to case documents, Rakib Ahmed went on a boat trip with his newly-married wife and a friend at a haor near their home on August 25.
They were on the boat along with the boatman, when eight men on another boat stopped them.
The men reportedly got on the boat, beat up the husband and the friend and raped the girl while videotaping the incident.
The perpetrators allegedly demanded Tk 900,000 and threatened to leak the video. They also threatened them with life if charges were brought against them.
Rakib Ahmed said that due to the perpetrators “being influential”, he got his wife treated at Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex where her situation deteriorated.
She was admitted to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital on Wednesday.
Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital Resident Doctor Moin Uddin said that the survivor was in trauma and had undergone medical tests.
