15 people reportedly injured on either side; Chhatra League denies incident

Some members of the Chhatra League and workers became embroiled in a clash over taking pictures of women without permission at a tea garden in Moulvibazar on Thursday morning.

Around 15 people from either side were injured in the incident and later received primary treatment at the upazila health complex, according to media reports.

SP Md Jakaria said the police had yet to receive any complaint from either side.

The incident took place at Zareen Tea Estate in the Radhanagar area of Sreemangal upazila.

Deputy Manager of the tea garden Md Ali was reportedly beaten up for asking some members of Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, who were on a tour from Dhaka, not to take photos of female tea workers in the area.

The workers of the estate attacked the visiting activists of the Chhatra League’s Dhaka North unit and vandalized Grand Mobin Resort, the hotel they were staying in.

Upon receiving the news, Sreemangal police soon brought the situation under control.

Condemning the attack by the tea workers, resort owner Abdul Mobin said he was at a loss as to how he would be compensated for the damage done to the property.

Zareen Tea Estate Manager Selim Reza said the workers only went to the resort after the Chhatra League members had assaulted the deputy manager of the garden and some of the women working there.

The estate authorities later managed to placate the agitated workers and brought them back, he added.

Meanwhile, denying the reported clash, Dhaka North Chhatra League President Ibrahim Hossain said they only had an argument with local tea workers over the latter being photographed.

The Chhatra League members did not beat anyone up, nor did they get assaulted by anyone, he claimed.
