She is admitted to a Dhaka hospital with 40% burns
A woman was set on fire after she reportedly rejected the marriage proposal of her home tutor, who was in an alleged extramarital affair, in Duimukh village at Ghior upazila, Manikganj on Monday.
The 25-year-old victim sustained 40% burns during the incident and is now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in a critical condition.
The accused, Sharif Miah, 40, a father of two, has not been arrested yet.
The victim, Kajal Akter, is a BA final year student of Manikganj Government Women's College.
According to the Kajal’s relatives and local UP member Miran Khan, Sharif developed an illicit relationship with Kajal while tutoring her.
Kajal’s mother said Kajal was married to an expatriate a year ago. Since then, she has tried to avoid Sharif. However, Sharif had been harassing Kajal in various ways.
On the night of the incident, Sharif asked Kajal to meet him in the garden next to her home. At one point, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze.
Then Sharif fled the scene. Upon hearing Kajal’s screams, the locals rushed her to Munnu Medical College Hospital. Doctors later sent her to Manikganj Sadar Hospital.
After receiving first aid there, she was transferred to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
A complaint was lodged by Kajal’s mother with Ghior police station in this connection which police turned into a case.
Officer in-Charge (OC) Riazuddin Ahmed Biplob said: "We have visited the scene and gathered evidence. We are trying to nab the accused.”
