The water level of the Padma River rose by three centimeters in the last 24 hours till Monday morning and is currently flowing 51cm above the danger level in Faridpur owing to the onrush of water from upstream and heavy rains.

However, Faridpur Water Development Board Executive Engineer Sultan Mahmud said the floodwater should start receding in 2-3 days.

Meanwhile, more than 50,000 people in 50 villages of 13 unions in Faridpur Sadar, Charbhadrasan, Sadarpur, Boyalmari and Madhukhali upazilas remain marooned.

The flood-affected victims continue to suffer from an acute crisis of food and water as relief items provided by the local administration proved to be inadequate.

Char Madhabdia Union Chairman Mirza Saiful Islam Azam said: “I received only 100 packets of food items against the 3,500 families that have been stranded in my union. This a matter of disgrace.”

Faridpur Sadar UNO Masum Reza said: “We have an allocation of 1,000 packets of dry food, 400 packets of baby food and 200 sacks of cow feed for the three unions under the upazila.”

Deputy Commissioner, Atul Sarkar said that relief materials were already distributed to 400 affected families in the North Channel Union and 350 families in the other two unions on Sunday.

He further added that 250 packets of relief were allotted to Decree Char and 100 packets to Char Madhabadia union.

The packets contained five kg of rice, one kg of lentils (daal), half a liter of oil, half a kg of flat rice (chira) and half a kg of sugar, he added
