6 killed as pick-up truck crashes into ditch in Natore

Seven other injured hospitalized

Six people, including two women, have been killed after a pick-up truck lost control and crashed into a roadside ditch in Gurudaspur upazila, Natore.

Several others were also injured in the incident that took place in Kachhikata Toll Plaza area on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Road on Sunday afternoon.

According to locals, the pick-up lost control as it was turning the corner in that area and fell into the 10-feet-deep ditch.

Bonpara highway police OC Mozaffar Hossain said the pick-up truck, carrying 11 passengers, was going to Dhaka from Kushtia when it crashed.

Five people were killed on the spot and eight others were injured. The survivors were taken to Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex, where one more person died, according to police and on-duty doctors.

Five of the deceased were later identified as Shahidul Islam, 25, Abu Affan Ahmed, 52, his wife Arifa Khatun, 40, Jasim Uddin, 32, and Al Mamun, 33.

The sixth deceased, a woman in her 30s, is yet to be identified.

The injured include Affan’s daughter Aklima, 2, Humayun Faridi, 45, his wife Farida Khatun, 35, and son Adil, 6, Akbar Ali, 39, Bilkis, 28, and her two-year-old child Toha.

They are currently undergoing treatment at different medical facilities in Gurudaspur and Baraigram.

Police later impounded the vehicle, but its driver managed to flee the scene. A case was started by highway police as well.
