Youth icon Sheikh Kamal’s birth anniversary Thursday

The award giving ceremony of the Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council (NSC) Award-2021 will be held on Thursday

The 72nd birth anniversary of youth icon Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is on Thursday.

Sheikh Kamal, one of the prominent organizers of the Liberation War and noted sports and cultural personality, was born at Tungipara village under the then Gopalganj subdivision on August 5, 1949 and embraced martyrdom on August 15, 1975, at the age of 26.

Sheikh Kamal played a heroic role in the mass uprising of 1969 and the great Liberation War of 1971 as a dedicated fighter and ideological activist of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

On the night of March 25, 1971, just before the Pakistan occupation forces attacked Bangabandhu's residence at Dhanmondi Road 32, he left home and took part in the War of Liberation.

Sheikh Kamal was trained in the first war course of independent Bangladesh and was commissioned in the Mukti Bahini, subsequently serving as aide-de-camp (ADC) to General Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the Mukti Bahini.

After liberation, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army and concentrated on his studies. He was a member of the central executive committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

After passing SSC from Shahin School and HSC from Dhaka College, Sheikh Kamal obtained a BA (honours) degree from the Social Science Department of Dhaka University.

He was a student of the setar playing department of Chayanaut. He also formed "Spondon Shilpi Gosthi" along with his friends, which is treated as one of the oldest musical bands of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Kamal was one of the foremost organizers of the theatre movement in post-independence Bangladesh and was one of the founders of Dhaka Theatre.

From his childhood, he was enthusiastic in various sports, including football, cricket, hockey and basketball.

On 14 July 1975, he married Sultana Khuku, a well-known “Blue” athlete of Dhaka University.

At the time of his assassination on 15th August 1975, he was a student of MA in the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka.

Programs

The Awami League and different sports and social-cultural organizations have planned elaborate programs to mark the day.

The Awami League and its associate bodies will pay tributes to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait at Dhanmondi Abahani Club premises at 8:30 am and at his grave in Banani at 9:15am on Thursday.

Later, recitations from the Holy Quran, milad and doa mahfil will be held.

Dhaka City Awami League south unit will arrange a discussion at Bangabandhu Avenue to mark this day.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has urged all leaders and workers of the party and its associate and like-minded bodies to observe the birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal in a befitting manner by following health guidelines.

Abahani Limited has also chalked out various programs to observe the birth anniversary of its club founder Shaheed Sheikh Kamal.

The directors, officials and players of Abahani Club paid tributes to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait at the club premises at 12:01am (early Thursday) and offered special prayers for the eternal peace of his soul.

The programs also include day-long recitations from the Holy Quran, a virtual discussion on the life and works of Sheikh Kamal at 4pm and doa mahfil at the club building after Asar prayers on Thursday through maintaining social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

10 personalities, 2 organizations nominated for Sheikh Kamal Award

Ten sports personalities and two organizations have been nominated in seven categories for the Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council (NSC) Award-2021, which has been introduced for the first time by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to virtually distribute the awards as the chief guest at a function to be held at Sheikh Kamal Auditorium of the National Sports Council (NSC) at 11:00am Thursday, said State Minister for Youth and Sports Mohammad Zahid Ahsan Russel MP, reports BSS.

Russel said each person would be given Tk1 lakh, a crest and a certificate of honour as a reward.

Akbar Ali, the captain of U-19 World Cup winner, is going to receive the award in the emerging athlete category while the country's top archer Ruman Sana has been nominated in the athlete category. 

Senior sports journalist Muhammad Kamruzzaman has been nominated in the sports journalist category.

The state minister said: "In recognition of the outstanding contributions made in various branches of sports, in light of the policy, after thorough scrutiny by the relevant committee, for the first time we are going to give Sheikh Kamal NSC Award 2021 to a total of twelve sports personalities in seven categories."

Earlier in 2020, the cabinet approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYAS) to include the birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, in “ka” class in order to observe the day nationally on August 5 every year. 

The awardees are:

Lifetime Honour Award - Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin

Athletes - Mahfuza Khatun Shila (swimming), Ruman Sana (archery), and Mabia Akter Simanto (weightlifting).

Sports Organizers - Manzoor Quader and Kya Shai Hra

Emerging Athletes - Akbar Ali (cricket), Fahad Rahman (chess), and Unnati Khatun (football)

Federation/ Association / Organization - Bangladesh Cricket Board

Sports Journalist - Muhammad Kamruzzaman
