A journalist in Tangail has been beaten up apparently because of a report he did on the district Awami Swechchhasebak League president and his son last year over their alleged involvement in a mugging and theft of a motorcycle.

Abdullah Al Masud, a cameraman of private TV station Channel 24, was assaulted in Akur Takur Para area of Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.

Seriously injured, Masud, who also works as the district correspondent of Bangladesh Bulletin and a staff reporter of tnewsbd, received treatment at a local hospital and filed a case at Sadar police station over the incident later that night.

He named Mirza Anwar Hossain, president of the district unit of ruling party wing Swechchhasebak League, and his son Mirza Siam Anwar Bishal, and their associate Md Rafi, Md Rakib, and several unidentified people in the case, accusing them of assault, attempt to murder and threatening him with murder.

According to case details, several people, including Anwar and Bishal, reportedly stopped Masud when he was going to Tangail Press Club on his motorcycle on Tuesday.

At one point, they started beating Masud, who claimed Bishal at the time had tried to hit him in the head with an iron rod with the intention of killing him.

They also snatched Tk15,000 in cash from Masud and vandalized his motorcycle, read the case statement.

When locals came to Masud’s rescue hearing his screams, the assailants started to run away and reportedly threatened to kill him in the future.

Demanding justice, Masud said he was beaten by Anwar and Bishal because he did a report on May 1 last year regarding their arrest in two cases over mugging and the theft of a motorcycle.

Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Moraduzzaman, also the investigating officer of Masud’s case, said they were trying to arrest the accused.

None of the accused in this case was available for comment despite multiple attempts to reach them.

Meanwhile, Tangail Press Club President Zafar Ahmed and General Secretary Kazi Zakerul Mawla and a number of local journalists condemned the attack on Masud and demanded immediate arrest of those involved.
