Covid death rate may continue to rise for three more weeks, say health authorities

The health authorities have warned that Covid-19 transmission will rise as the ongoing lockdown has been relaxed for two weeks.

If  health guidelines are not maintained on public transports and in markets, shopping malls and cattle markets, the infection rate will rise further after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

In the present situation, the upward trend of the Covid infection rate will continue for two weeks while the death rate may continue to rise for three more weeks, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The worsening situation worries the government since a good number of people would need hospitalization amid a crisis of Covid-dedicated beds and ICUs.

Covid advisory panel shocked by decision

Members of the National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 have said the restrictions should have been made tougher at this time but instead they are being relaxed, which is very shocking. People do not follow health guidelines and the relaxation is just increasing the risk of more infections.

The committee members said they did not agree with the move and the decision was completely opposite to what they had advised, reports Bangla Tribune.

The announcement on an easing of the lockdown came just a day after Bangladesh recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases (13,768) in the 24 hours between Sunday and Monday mornings.

NTAC chief Prof Dr Md Shahidullah said: “If the lockdown had been extended by another week, we could have seen a downward trend in the number of cases and deaths.

“We had advised keeping the strict lockdown in place for two more weeks. But now as it has been relaxed, everyone is going to come out of their house and flout health guidelines, resulting in more infections.”

DGHS urges people to follow Covid-19 guidelines

Dr Robed Amin, spokesperson of DGHS, through a virtual health bulletin on Wednesday requested people to adhere to health safety rules even though movement restrictions are to be withdrawn from July 15.

“At the moment, we are in the most vulnerable situation since the beginning of the pandemic [last year],” he added.

The month of July is proving to be the worst for the country as more than 133,000 cases have been detected in the first half. It was 112,000 during the same period last month.

As of Tuesday, Dhaka hospitals have only 1,700 beds and 170 ICUs while hospitals all over the country altogether have 4,500 beds and 269 ICUs, he said.

The DGHS believes that the infection rate will drop if the restrictions on movement can be maintained properly all over the country.

Officials say Chapainawabganj has proved that movement restriction really works. The district managed to have its infection rate decline from 72% to 13% within three weeks as the administration and locals joined hands to make that happen.
