New Covid-19 patients currently can’t get admission to the hospital until the inmates recover and are released

All 100 seats, including the 10 ICU beds, at the Dedicated Covid Isolation Hospital in Rangpur have remained fully occupied since Saturday, reducing the admission possibility of new Covid-19 patients.

New Covid-19 patients currently can’t get admission to the hospital until the inmates recover and are released, said health officials concerned.

Meanwhile, of the 100 seats, 91 have a central oxygen supply line and of the 10 ICU beds, only eight have ventilator facilities.

Moreover, the hospital is also experiencing a supply shortage of high flow nasal cannula.

As of Monday, there were around 20 patients in the queue for the ICU.

To tackle the rush of the Covid-19 patients, authorities of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH) recently launched a new 100-bed Covid Unit.

"As the number of newly infected patients is increasing abnormally daily in recent weeks, we have increased the number of beds at the Covid-19 unit from 100 to 131," Director of RpMCH Dr Rezaul Karim said.

He also informed the local reporters that capacity of the hospital would be increased further to admit Covid-19 patients if the situation continues to deteriorate further.

Nurun Nabi, superintendent of the Covid-19 unit at RpMCH, said, "We are struggling as more patients are coming from nearby districts every day. Most of the patients need critical care, including ICU support. We, however, have no alternative as we have shortage of such support."

The number of Covid-19 cases has rapidly crossed the 29,500 mark further deteriorating the situation in Rangpur division where the daily positivity rate continues rising hastily in recent weeks.

Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases speedily climbed to 29,542 as 618 new patients were reported after testing 1,681 collected samples at the positivity rate of 34.79% on Monday in the division.

Meanwhile, 10 more patients from Rangpur, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and Dinajpur died during the last 24 hours ending at 8am Tuesday, raising the number of casualties to 592 in the division.
