Tangail Municipality Panel Mayor Hafizur Rahman Swapan has been expelled from the post for making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
An officer order signed by Mayor SM Sirajul Haq was issued on Monday afternoon, with immediate effect.
Hafizur, also the councillor of ward No 16, was expelled from the Awami League on the same grounds on June 13. He had been serving as the vice-president of Tangail city unit Awami League.
A former Chhatra Dal leader, Hafizur joined the Awami League in June 2014. He got the post of joint general secretary and later became vice-president of the city unit Awami League.
Ward Councillor Tanvir Hasan Ferdous Noman has been appointed as the new panel mayor.
On June 9, Ward Councillor Atiqur Rahman Morshed filed a case against Hafizur under the Digital Security Act with Tangail Sadar police station for insulting the prime minister.
According to the case, on June 5, Hafizur slandered and made remarks belittling the prime minister while talking over phone with Mofizur Rahman, the son-in-law of a land owner, regarding land survey in Akurtakur area of the city.
His statement spread on social media and caused uproar among the leaders and workers of different levels of the ruling party.
Mofizur filed a general diary with Tangail Sadar police station on Wednesday accusing the panel mayor of threatening him over the phone on June 5.
