No injuries were reported—but some vehicles got buried the debris
An under-construction multi-storey building collapsed completely in Rajshahi city’s Koyerdara area on Sunday, thanks to the substandard construction materials that were used in it.
Despite such a grave matter, the building authorities could not instantly confirm if they had obtained the design of the building from the Rajshahi Development Authority (RDA).
Even though no casualties were reported in the incident, several vehicles parked on the construction site were buried under the debris.
The building was constructed up to its third floor covering 1,200 sq-ft area.
“The primary work for its fourth floor was already done—but the building caved in all of a sudden around 3pm [on Sunday]. It seems that low-quality materials were used by the construction firm assigned,” Abdur Rauf, senior officer of Rajshahi Sadar fire station, said.
Meanwhile, sources say the construction remained stalled for a year now.
The building owner’s manager, Tofazzal Hossain, claimed that they had used quality materials in the facility.
“The building [up to the fourth floor] was already built and nobody used to stay in it,” he said.
Tofazzal said that he was not sure if the RDA had cleared the building’s design.
On this front, the fire service official said that they would investigate all possible reasons for the collapse.
