Police had been called as no one was opening the door
A 50-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were found dead in Sylhet’s Osmani Nagar upazila early Sunday in what police are describing as an apparent murder-suicide.
Gouranga Baidya, who was a house help, murdered the woman, school teacher Tapati Rani Dey, before killing himself, investigators say.
Tapati taught at the local Soairgaon Primary School. Her Husband Bijoy Bhushan Dey and their son are doctors.
Police had been called as no one was opening the door when Bijoy returned home on Saturday night.
Around midnight, Sub-Inspector Nazmul Huda of the local Osmani Nagar police station entered the house through a bathroom window.
Tapati was found dead on the floor with her throat slit while Gouranga was hanging from the ceiling.
The bodies have been sent to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet city for autopsy, said Osmani Nagar police OC Shyamol Banik. “An investigation has been launched,” he said.
A senior police officer said they doubt that an outsider was involved as the door was locked from the inside.
Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfar Rahman said: “We suspect that the house help took his own life after murdering the woman.”
