Covid deaths, infections rising in Khulna region

At least nine people died from coronavirus and over 200 tested positive in three districts of Khulna region on Thursday, amid a strict lockdown in force.  

Of them, four people including two women died in Satkhira Medical College Hospital, three in Khulna and two in Bagerhat, according to officials. 

Dr Manos Kumar Mandal, focal person at the Satkhira hospital said that 48 out of 95 people tested positive on Thursday.

So far, 2,145 people have been infected with the virus, and 549 people are taking treatment at the hospitals. As many as 288 people died from the virus attack in the district, where a strict lockdown has been in force since June 5.

Meanwhile, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh have intensified patrol along the border to prevent illegal movement of people. 

In Bagerhat, two people died on Thursday from Covid while 61 out of 155 people tested positive.

Meanwhile, the authorities in Mongla have imposed a strict lockdown till June 16 as the Covid situation worsened.

So far, coronavirus has killed 53 people in the district and infected 1,995 others. Of the infected people, 13 are undergoing treatment at the government hospital while the others are kept in isolation at home, according to Civil Surgeon Dr KM Humayun Kabir.

In Khulna, deaths from coronavirus decreased Thursday – three died while undergoing treatment. The number was nine on Wednesday.

The surge in Covid infections has created a crisis for beds at the Covid-dedicated hospital, according to Dr Suhas Ranhan Halder, focal person at the Covid ward.

Meanwhile, people waiting in long queues for Covid tests have complained of irregularities and mismanagement at the hospital.

“The hospital authorities have decided to build an oxygen plant to prevent a possible crisis in the future. We hope to launch it next week,” said Senior Resident Medical Officer Dr Anjan Chakrabarty.

To improve service, the hospital authorities have sought permission to open a second Covid ward and to recruit 20 more doctors. 

Khulna Divisional Director of Health Division Dr Rasheda Sultana said that she had not received any such request.
