At least 16 people were killed on Tuesday and several others injured in lightning strikes when thunderstorms ravaged several districts of Bangladesh.
In Netrokona, eight people were killed on Tuesday afternoon and nine others injured critically, when lightning bolts struck four upazilas of the district during a sudden heavy rainfall.
Netrakona Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kazi Mohammad Abdur Rahman told BSS that three people were killed in Khaliajuri upazila, two persons were killed in Modan upazila, two persons were killed in Kendua upazila and one person was killed in Purbadhala upazila.
“Besides, five persons were injured in Khaliajuri upazila and four others injured in Modan upazila when a flash of lightning struck them in the sudden heavy rainfall’, he said.
In Khaliajuri upazila, Washek Mia, 32 and Bipul Mia, 28, of village Jogannathpur and Monir Mia,28, of village Bathuail were killed by a flash of lightning which hit them
They were struck by lightning bolts while harvesting Boro paddy in Borbori Haor near their houses .
In Kendua upazila, Bayazid Mia, 42, of village Bairati and Fazlur Rahman, 55, of village Kundoli under the Kendua upazila were killed by thunderbolt strike when they were working in their paddy field in front of their houses in the heavy rainfall.
In Madan upazila, Atabur Rahman, 21, of Fatehpur village and Sharif Mia,18, of the same village under the Modan upazila were killed when they were playing football on Fatepur maidan during heavy downpour.
In Purbadhala upazila, Md Junayed, 11, of village Pagli under the Purbadhala upazila was killed by thunderbolt when he was playing football on his house yard during ceaseless rainfall.
Netrokona district administration handed over Tk15,000 each dead for their burial and Tk3,000 for each injured person for their treatment, DC added.
5 others killed in Faridpur, Comilla
In Faridpur, four people, including a woman, were killed in lightning strikes during a thunderstorm on Tuesday.
They are Anwara Begum, 45, of Molladangi village of Ward No 5 under Faridpur municipality, Kabir Molla, 48, of Ward No 5 of West Gangabardu area, Dulal Khan, 58, of Nath Channel union under Faridpur Sadar upazila, and Kabir Sheikh, of Chandpur village under Madhukhali upazila.
Anwara Begum was killed while bringing back paddy home from her farmland along with her husband and son. Dulal Khan died in a similar accident.
Meanwhile, Kabir Mollah and Kabir Sheikh, both farmers, were working on their respective croplands when they were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents.
Faridpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) confirmed the death of three and said all must remain alert to avoid such incidents. He asked everyone not to venture out during a thunderstorm and remain at home.
In Comilla’s Homna upazila, another farmer lost his life due to lightning strikes around 6pm on Tuesday.
The deceased is Abdul Momen, 32, of Sitarampur village under Chanderchar union of Homna upazila.
He rushed to his field, adjacent to his house, to bring his cow back to the shed as it started raining when a thunderbolt hit and killed him on the spot.
Chanderchar Union Parishad Chairman Abul Bashar confirmed the matter.
Furthermore, in Manikganj, lightning strikes killed a day labourer and a school boy in the Sadar upazila. The victims were Azmat Ali, 50, and Asif Mollah, 14.
According to local sources quoted by UNB, the incidents took place around 5:30pm.
In addition, 17-year-old Ariful Islam was killed in a lightning strike in Kishoreganj.
