Ten people were killed and several others were injured in separate road accidents in six districts of the country on Wednesday.
In Gazipur, two people, including a member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), died and four others sustained injuries after a Mymensingh-bound microbus collided with the parked microbus of the elite force on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
The accident took place in the Bhabanipur area of Sadar upazila around 9am, confirmed Mauna highway police OC Kamal Hossain.
The deceased were identified as RAB Sergeant Khairul Bashar, 40, and autorickshaw driver Amir Uddin Shah Liton, 35.
The injured included RAB Deputy Assistant Director Shariful Islam, 42, RAB members Pradeep Kumar, 40, and Atiq Hasanam, 30, and auto repairman Rifat Hossain, 25.
Police later seized the killer microbus and arrested its driver.
In Narsingdi, a doctor couple and another person were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus before the People’s University of Bangladesh on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.
They were identified as Dr Jahirul Huq, 35, his wife Dr Tuhin and microbus driver Md Khokon, according to Itakhola highway police outpost OC Nur Haydar Talukdar.
Five other people were also injured.
OC Nur said the bus driver fled the spot soon after and a case was being filed over the incident.
In Barisal, two garment factory workers were killed and two others injured when a speeding bus rammed an e-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Gournadi upazila.
The deceased were identified as Alamin, 32, and Rakibul Hasan, 34, reports UNB.
Gouranadi highway police OC Manirul Islam Bhuiya said the accident occurred around 8am when the Madaripur-bound bus hit the e-rickshaw on the high-speed corridor in Ashokati after its driver lost control.
Alamin and Rakibul were killed on the spot while the injured were later hospitalized, he said, adding: "One of the injured, Forkan, was later shifted to a hospital in Dhaka for better treatment. His condition is said to be critical."
In Rajshahi, a car driver was killed and at least 15 others injured when a microbus collided head-on with a car in the Jhalmalia area on Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway under Puthia upazila early on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Raju Ahmed, 50, reports BSS.
Six of the injured were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) and they were in critical condition, said RMCH Deputy Director Dr Saiful Ferdous.
Nine others were admitted to other local clinics and hospitals.
Shibpurh highway police OC Lutfor Rahman said the Rajshahi-bound microbus with around 10 passengers on board from Dhaka collided head-on with the car around 4:30am.
Locals had rushed the injured to RMCH where Raju later succumbed to his injuries.
Police later impounded both vehicles and a case was filed with Puthiya police over the incident.
Meanwhile, in Dhaka, a rickshaw puller was killed after a speeding car hit his vehicle on Basabo Flyover in the Sabujbagh area, reports UNB.
The identity of the deceased, aged about 35, could not be known immediately.
The man was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition after the incident in the early hours. Doctors there declared him dead around 5:30am.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, the in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the death and said the body was kept at the morgue for an autopsy.
In Bogra, a motorcyclist was killed and his friend critically injured after their bike was rear-ended by a truck in the Saharpukur Bazar area under Dupchanchia upazila around 1pm on Wednesday.
Dupchanchia police OC Hasan Ali identified the deceased as Morsalin Pramanik, 23. He had returned home from abroad nearly a month ago.
His friend Md Tanvir, 30, who was on the bike with him, was admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital with critical injuries, said the OC.
Police were working on finding the killer truck and arresting its driver.
