Md Jashimul Islam alias Jack, Md Abdul Mukit, Md Aminul Haq and Sajib Ikhtiar apprehended on charges of plotting to carry out sabotage from Mohammadpur's Basila area in Dhaka on May 9, 2021 Collected

Four suspected operatives of the banned militant outfit have been arrested, remanded

Operatives of outlawed militant outfit Ansar al Islam plotted to carry out attacks on the patrols of police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), says the chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.

They were also trying to make explosive devices using oxygen cylinders, said Md Asaduzzaman, head of CTTC unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

He made remarks during a press conference at the DMP media centre in the capital on Sunday after arresting four suspected members of the militant outfit.

On Saturday evening, a team of CTTC conducted a raid in Mohammadpur's Basila area and apprehended Md Jashimul Islam alias Jack, Md Abdul Mukit, Md Aminul Haq and Sajib Ikhtiar on charges of plotting to carry out sabotage.

The law enforcers also seized a bag, a machete, five mobile phones and two laptops from their possessions.

A case was filed against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Mohammadpur police. On Sunday, a Dhaka court ordered seven-day remand for each of them in the case.

Members of the outlawed militant group, linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibilities for 11 machete attacks since 2013 when 13 people – mostly secularists and activists who supported the Shahbagh Movement – were killed in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet.

According to the CTTC officials, Jashimul is the first year student of Bachelor of Business Administration at Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology and Aminul is a student of Al Hidayah Islamic Institute in Sylhet.

On the other hand, Mukit is the teacher of a madrasa at Nabiganj of Habiganj and Sajib is a student of Sunamganj Government College.

At the press conference, Asaduzzaman, also a deputy inspector general of police, said that the arrested militants had chalked out a secret plan to launch attacks on police and BGB patrols in Dhaka and Sylhet.

Two members of their team have fled to Afghanistan. The four militants were also planning to go to Afghanistan after carrying out the attacks.

“Recently, they attacked a hotel in Sylhet city with sharp weapons, leaving its manager injured,” he added.
