Police on Friday arrested a 65-year-old man in a case filed for raping a neighbour’s four-year-old child in Kalihati upazila of Tangail.
The arrestee is Nasu Mandal of Malati village in Narandia union of the upazila.
The girl's father filed a case with Kalihati police on Friday afternoon, confirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kalihati Circle) Rasel Monir.
The child was admitted to Tangail General Hospital with severe injuries.
According to police and locals, Nasu Mandal raped the child after luring her to his house when she was playing near the local mosque with her friends on Thursday.
Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the spot, rescued the girl and apprehended Nasu.
‘Rape epidemic’ in Bangladesh
Earlier last month, a Police Headquarters report said that 26,695 rape cases had been filed across the country in the last five years.
Rights group Ain o Salish Kendra says that at least 1,018 children were raped last year alone, but only 683 police cases were filed. Of the victims, 116 are aged below six.
In November last year, Bangladesh introduced the death penalty for rape, following days of protests against sexual violence against women in several cities across Bangladesh.
