A mortar shell was found while a pond was being dug near Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall in the martyrs’ memorial area of Rajshahi University on Tuesday
An army team has defused the mortar shell recovered from the bank of a pond at Rajshahi University (RU).
The bomb was detonated in an open space near the martyrs’ memorial in RU at around 12:30pm on Wednesday.
A bomb disposal team from Bogra Cantonment arrived at the spot at noon and detonated the shell after taking it to a safe location. The shell was then detonated with a loud sound.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Motihar police station Siddiqur Rahman said: “Since mortar shells are military weapons, we informed the army as we do not have the capacity to deactivate it. The mortar shell was detonated by an army team in the presence of the university proctor on Wednesday.”
Rajshahi University Proctor Professor Lutfar Rahman said the recovered mortar shell was quite old.
There was a Pakistani military camp beside the spot from where the shell was recovered from. It was therefore assumed that the mortar is from the time of the Liberation War, he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, a worker named Sharif found the shell while engaged in digging a pond near Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall in the martyrs’ memorial area of Rajshahi University.
Police and RAB then visited the spot, but the RAB went back as it did not have the wherewithal to deactivate the mortar shell.
Later on Wednesday, an army bomb disposal team came from Bogra and detonated it.
