The alleged gunfight took place in the early hours of Friday
A Rohingya youth named Mohammad Ibrahim was killed reportedly in a gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members on Bangladesh-Myanmar border at Ghumdhum in Naikhongchhari, an upazila in Bandarban adjacent to Cox's Bazar district.
BGB says the deceased was a yaba peddler. He was from Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.
The alleged gunfight took place in the Baishfari area of Ghumdhum in Naikhongchhari at around 3:30am on Friday.
Cox's Bazar 34 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad Ahmed said members of the BGB patrol team on duty at the time received a tip-off about some smugglers coming into Bangladesh with yaba through Baishfari.
The BGB team laid an ambush to catch the smugglers, who, upon realizing what was happening, opened fire at them. As BGB retaliated in self-defence, the yaba smugglers fled, the BGB commander said.
Later, the BGB team recovered the body of Ibrahim from the scene, as well as 80,000 yaba pills, a weapon and two rounds of ammunition, he added.
Police later sent the body to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Legal action is being taken in this regard.
