Police have sought his seven-day remand in a case involving violence on March 28
Law enforcers have arrested Noor Hossain Noorani, a central leader of Qawmi madrasa-based radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam, from Munshiganj.
Also president of Khatme Nabuwat Andolon Bangladesh, Noorani, 54, was arrested from his residence in Munsirhat in the Sadar upazila around Thursday midnight, police say.
He was shown arrested in a case filed over violence during Hefazat’s general strike in Sirajdikhan of Munshiganj on March 28, Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakkar Siddique said.
“It is being investigated whether there is any case against him with any other police station,” the OC added.
Police produced Noorani before the court of Munshiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Nazneen Rehana around 10am on Friday and sought a seven-day remand to interrogate him.
The court later set April 27 for a hearing on the remand plea and sent him to jail, confirmed Munshiganj court police Inspector Jamal Uddin.
With Noorani, at least 15 central leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam including the most controversial leader, Mamunul Haque, have so far been arrested by the law enforcement agencies in recent days.
On Thursday, a Rapid Action Battalion team picked up Khaled Saifullah Ayubi, assistant secretary general of the Islamist group's central unit, from Singair upazila in Manikganj.
On Wednesday, three top Hefazat leaders were arrested from Dhaka's Mohammadpur and Kafrul areas.
They are Khurshid Alam Kasemi, nayeb-e-ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish and vice-president of Hefazat-e-Islam; Ataullah Amin, assistant general secretary of Hefazat's Dhaka city unit and joint secretary general of Khelafat Majlish; and Sharafat Hossain, joint general secretary of Khelafat Majlish.
On Tuesday, Qurban Ali Kasemi, vice-president of Hefazat and joint secretary general of Khelafat Majlish, was also arrested from Dhaka's Basabo area.
Hefazat Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque was arrested from a Mohammadpur madrasa on April 18.
Other arrested leaders include Hefazat's Dhaka city unit President Junaid Al-Habib, Vice-President Maulana Jubair Ahmed, Assistant General Secretary Jalaluddin Ahmed, Assistant Publicity Secretary Sharifullah and Organizing Secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi.
