Police have sought his seven-day remand in a case involving violence on March 28

Law enforcers have arrested Noor Hossain Noorani, a central leader of Qawmi madrasa-based radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam, from Munshiganj.

Also president of Khatme Nabuwat Andolon Bangladesh, Noorani, 54, was arrested from his residence in Munsirhat in the Sadar upazila around Thursday midnight, police say.

He was shown arrested in a case filed over violence during Hefazat’s general strike in Sirajdikhan of Munshiganj on March 28, Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakkar Siddique said.

“It is being investigated whether there is any case against him with any other police station,” the OC added.

Police produced Noorani before the court of Munshiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Nazneen Rehana around 10am on Friday and sought a seven-day remand to interrogate him.

The court later set April 27 for a hearing on the remand plea and sent him to jail, confirmed Munshiganj court police Inspector Jamal Uddin.

With Noorani, at least 15 central leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam including the most controversial leader, Mamunul Haque, have so far been arrested by the law enforcement agencies in recent days.
