Awami League Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said that the activities of arrested Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque are threats to the state, society, and religion as well.

“The recent activities of Mamunul Haque and the way he led the mayhem of Hefazat in 2013 are threats to the country, society, and Islam as well,” he told media at his official residence in Dhaka on Monday.

Hasan said Mamunul even mocked our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“Who gave him the right to do this? If anyone else had done it, then what Mamunul and his followers would have done to them?” he asked.

Hasan said it was clear that he (Allama Shafi) was pushed to death through torture. “The room of Allama Shafi, the founder of Hathazari Madrasa, was vandalized while he was ill. His ambulance was forcibly stopped for about one hour on the way to the hospital and his oxygen tube was also opened,” he added.

Islam, he said, is not leased out to some ambitious religious leaders.

Replying to a query over the comment of BNP leader Mirza Abbas, the minister said he (Abbas) told the truth regarding Ilias Ali on am online meeting.

But, later, he tried to blame the media for that statement after facing criticism from his party, he added.

“I would like to extend my thanks to Mirza Abbas, to tell the truth, and hope that he will tell the truth in the future also,” Hasan said.

Replying to another query about a video that was viral in different media including social media, the minister said, “I would like to give thanks to law enforcement agencies for their activeness during thelockdown.

“But, they should keep in mind that no one should be harassed in this process.”

He said that doctors, journalists, law enforcers, and other health workers are the frontline fighters in combating Covid.

“Even many leaders of my party [Awami League] died as they stand beside the common people during the pandemic, he added.
