Police have arrested Hefazat-e-Islam's Narayanganj unit leader Mufti Bashir Ullah in a case filed over the series of violent protests in the district carried out by the group's activists during last month's general strike.
He was arrested from the Sanarpar area in Siddhirganj around 11pm on Tuesday, Siddhirganj police station OC Mashiur Rahman said on Wednesday.
The OC said Bashir, who is the general secretary of the Islamist organization's Narayanganj district unit, will be sent to the court soon.
According to police sources, Bashir led the violence that took place in Narayanganj on March 28. His arrest had followed the evidence.
A total of 3,700 people have been charged in eight cases filed at Siddhirganj police station over the violence during Hefazat's daylong hartal.
So far, police have arrested 79 people, including leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Hefazat.
