At least two people were killed and 10 others injured in a clash that broke out between the residents of two villages in Barisal.

The incident took place at the Dakshin Ulania union under Mehendiganj upazila on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Saiful Sardar, 28, and Sayed Chowdhury, 35. Saiful died on the spot and Sayed succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Barisal Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin Haider, said: “Additional law enforcers have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.”

According to sources, Sunday’s clash ensued following an ongoing feud between the supporters of the candidates participating in the recently postponed union parishad polls.

Meanwhile, the male members of villages have fled the area to avoid arrest and police inquiry, they added.

Habibur Rahman Liton, acting chairman of Dakshin Ulania union, said: “Hundreds of people attacked the Sultani village with locally made weapons around 4am on Sunday. A number of shops and houses were vandalized in the attack.”

He alleged that the attack took place over the recently postponed Ulania union parishad elections.

“The attackers are the people of chairman candidate Milon Chowdhury. Deceased Saiful was a supporter of another chairman candidate Ruma Begum,” Liton added.

Barisal Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain said: “Those responsible for the attack will not be spared. Efforts are underway to arrest the culprits. We have deployed additional force in the area.”
