Security heightened at all police stations in the northeastern district
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has set up light machine gun (LMG) posts in six police stations of the city in a move to beef up security.
SMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) BM Ashraf Ullah Taher confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
He said the members of the law enforcement agency were already on duty at the security posts from Thursday morning.
Additionally, action had been taken to increase security at 11 other police stations all over Sylhet district.
The move came following the Hefazat-e-Islam’s countrywide violence and arson attack at police stations last month.
Ashraf Ullah Taher said: “Recently, some extremist groups have been carrying out subversive activities in different parts of the country. They have destroyed public property through vandalism and arson.”
“In this situation, special security measures have been taken at six police stations, all outposts and important installations under SMP. LMG posts have been constructed with barricades at each installation,” he added.
