UPDF (Democratic) has blamed UPDF (Prasit) for the incident

Thirteen locals, including four of a family, have been injured in a series of attacks by a group of miscreants in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari.

The incidents took place between Sunday and Monday in Laifu Kumar Karbari Para area of Tabalchhari in Matiranga upazila.

According to local residents, a group of 30 to 35 armed miscreants attacked local farmers over land disputes and terrorized the area in Laifu Kumar Karbari Para.

Following the attacks, UPDF (Democratic) blamed UPDF (Prasit) for the incident in a media statement.

Locals said the incident occurred when the miscreants threatened the farmers and asked them to stop working in their field on Sunday morning. However, ignoring the threat, the locals started working on the field.

At that point, the miscreants started beating up the locals and fired 60/70 blank shots to create panic among people in the area.

On Monday, the miscreants again entered the village and evicted the locals from their homes.

Later at night, the miscreants again started attacking the villagers. When the news of the attacks spread, locals from neighbouring areas got together and chased away the miscreants.

One of the injured in the incident, Md Shah Jalal, said: “As I went to work on my field with my wife and two sons, some armed terrorists of UPDF stopped us. At a point they attacked us.”

Demanding a fair investigation over the incident, he urged the authorities to set up a camp of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to protect the land and livelihood of the locals.

During the chase and counter chase, thirteen locals were injured. The miscreants also set fire to a local tea shop during the incident.

Two of the injured were undergoing treatment at Panchhari Upazila Health Complex while another injured person, named Abu Taleb, received primary treatment at Matiranga Upazila Health Complex. Others returned home after receiving treatment locally.

All of them are residents of Islampur and Shuknachhari areas of Tabalchhari and Taindang union.

Matiranga police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Ali said the incident was being investigated. Legal action would be taken once the police received a formal complaint.

He said the law and order situation in the area was under control.
