Around 1,000 people have been made accused over the attack on Chhatak police station in Sunamganj allegedly by the activists of Hefazat-e-Islam.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Mia lodged the case on Sunday citing names of 94 people and unnamed 800 to 900 others, confirmed the police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Nazim Uddin.

The law enforcers apprehended 10 more people on Sunday night in connection with the attack, he said.

Earlier, police detained nine suspects on Saturday night and they have been shown arrested in the case, the OC said, adding that a court in Sunamganj sent them to jail on Sunday.

"The situation is normal in the area. Other perpetrators who were involved in the attack will be apprehended after investigation."

On Saturday night, a large number of activists of the Islamist group took to the streets in Chhatak and staged demonstrations over the news that Hefazat Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque had been kept in police custody at a resort in Narayanganj.

The Hefazat men allegedly attacked the police station, pelting brick chips and vandalizing its waiting room.

Police fired blanks in self-defence and later detained nine suspects.

At least eight policemen were injured in the attack.

Additional law enforcement officials were deployed in the area to deter any further incidents.
