The accident took place at around 3:30am on Saturday when a truck carrying stones over the maximum load capacity climbed on the bridge

A bailey bridge on the Dowarabazar-Chhatak road in Sunamganj's Dowarabazar upazila collapsed early Saturday night.

The accident took place at around 3:30am on Saturday when a truck carrying stones over the maximum load capacity climbed on the bridge.

Since then, direct road communication between Dowarabazar and Chhatak upazilas remained suspended.

Being a rickety-old bridge, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) had put up a signboard stating the maximum load capacity of 3 tons before the bailey bridge over the Noaz canal near Naingaon village in Sadar union of the upazila.

But none is obeying that ban and that is why the bridge has collapsed, said locals.

Locals, including local UP Chairman Abdul Bari, said the ongoing work on the new bailey bridge to be built on the same site remains stalled due to a crisis in land acquisition, causing locals suffering.

SM Saiful Islam, sub-divisional engineer of RHD, said preparations are underway to repair the bridge as quickly as possible, the engineer added.

Dowarabazar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazir Alam said an alternative bridge was being constructed in the area for pedestrians and motorcyclists.
