Police arrested one Mahbub Hossain Abad following the incident for allegedly murdering his stepmother and stepsiblings
A woman and her two children have been hacked to death in Sylhet allegedly by her stepson for reasons yet unknown, said police.
The incident took place at Mir Mahalla of Shahparan area in Sadar upazila around 12am on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Rubia Begum, 30, her daughter Maha, 9, and son Tahsan, 7.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Shah Paran police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Anisur Rahman said: “Rubia Begum’s step-son Mahbub Hossain Abad has been arrested soon after the incident. He is being interrogated at the police station. He will be shown arrested in this case.”
Mahbub lived with his father Abdal Hossain Bulbul, stepmother Rubia and stepsiblings Maha and Tahsan at Mir Mahalla. He worked at his father's grocery shop in the town’s BIDC (Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation) area.
The tragic incident occurred between 11:45pm and 12am (the intervening night of Thursday-Friday) just as Abdal was about to close his shop on Thursday night.
Police primarily suspect that Mahbub used a sharp weapon to attack his stepmother and stepsiblings at their house. He then set fire to the bed in the room and closed the door from inside. Locals rushed to the spot and called the cops.
Informed, police broke into the room and recovered the body of the woman and her daughter and rescued the boy in critical condition. Tahsan was rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 4am Friday.
Seeking anonymity, an on-duty doctor at the emergency department of Osmani Medical College Hospital said victims’ bodies bore numerous sharp weapon wounds.
