He was reportedly tortured for over four hours
A madrasa student was beaten to death over theft of a mobile phone in Manirampur upazila of Jessore on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Mamun Hasan, 21, son of Mashier Gazi of the upazila’s Khojalipur village and a student of Manirampur Alia Madrasa.
Quoting locals, Manirampur police station OC Rafiqul Islam said some people beat up Mamun mercilessly after tying up his hands and legs at the house of one Aynal early Wednesday, accusing him of stealing a mobile phone.
He was tortured there for over four hours.
Anisur Rahman, a UP member, said Mamun used to steal mobile phones and electric water pump machines. Nearly eight months ago, he had stolen Aynal’s mobile phone and returned it after village arbitration, he added.
Mamun’s mother Sakina Begum said: “Mamun left home on Tuesday night and around 3am I came to know that he was beaten over theft charge at Aynal’s house. When I reached there I found him in critical condition.”
Police rescued Mamun and took him to Manirampur Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries around 3pm Wednesday.
Later, his father filed a case at Manirampur police station against 12 people.
Police have arrested three people in this connection so far.
