They demanded Tk500,000, but took Tk110,000
A bKash agent has filed a case against two policemen among three in Madaripur for allegedly extorting money from him by threatening to kill him in what he termed crossfire.
Hailing from the district's Bhanga upazila, Sujan Sheikh filed a case with the court of Madaripur Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Saidur Rahman on Thursday.
The accused are Datta Para Police Investigation Centre's Assistant Sub-Inspector Mahbub, Constable Shohagh and Tokon Bepari, a mobile shop owner from the district's Shibchar upazila.
According to the case dockets, Sujan was returning home on a motorbike after visiting the Padma Bridge site in Shibchar upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
When he reached the Suryanagar area under the upazila for a tea break at a roadside shop, the two policemen in plainclothes intercepted him and asked to show the papers for his motorbike.
Sujan showed them the documents as asked, but the policemen termed those "inconsistent" and demanded Tk500,000 from him.
At one stage, Sujan declined to pay them the money, reacting to which they threatened him with crossfire if he did not pay.
With no other way left, Sujan finally agreed to give them some money and withdrew Tk110,000 through bKash at Tokon's shop. After that, they let go of Sujan, warning him to keep the matter secret.
Immediately afterwards, Sujan went to Shibchar police station to file a complaint-- but was not permitted to do so.
When contacted, Sujan said he had attached evidence of the extortion in the case document.
Datta Para Police Investigation Centre's In-Charge Emdadul Haque said the case resulted from a "misunderstanding" between Sujan and his two colleagues.
However, high officials in the police department would look into the matter, he said.
Meanwhile, Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police Md Abdul Hannan said the department would not take responsibility for the personal fault or crime of any policeman.
"Once the copy of the case reaches us, departmental action will be taken against the accused," he added.
