Police have arrested a man on charges of raping an 11-year-old boy in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj.

The arrested is Md Jahangir, 42, a resident of Kishoreganj.

Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dipak Saha said the rape survivor's father filed a case against Jahangir on Saturday in this regard.

Later, police conducted a drive in the Dewli Chourapara area and apprehended the accused, he said.

Police said the boy, a student of a local madrasa, went to the bank of Shitalakshya River on February 10 to dump waste from the institution.

At that time, Jahangir forcibly took him to a secluded place near Amirabad Government Primary School and raped him.

His parents learnt of the matter on Saturday when he disclosed the reason for his reluctance to go to the madrasa.

Citing the boy, police said he was also raped by the accused last year.

The OC said Jahangir will be produced before a court on Sunday.

Rapes in Bangladesh

Cases of rape are on the rise in Bangladesh, despite the government introducing death penalty for the heinous crime.

According to data compiled by rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), 1,018 children were raped last year alone, but only 683 cases were filed at police stations. Among them, some 116 were of six years or below.

Overall, 1,627 cases of rape were reported last year and 53 of the victims were killed by the perpetrators after the crime while 14 took their own lives, the ASK data reveals.

In November last, Bangladesh introduced the death penalty for rape cases, following days of protests against sexual violence against women.
