Speakers say family members of Selina Hayat Ivy have grabbed the endowed property worth around Tk100 crore through forged documents

Locals have staged a protest rally alleging Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy’s family forged documents to grab an endowed property adjacent to a temple and a pond in the district.

The Narayanganj district Hindu community staged the demonstration on Saturday at Deobhog Zeus pond area.

Several district organizations, including the Narayanganj Awami League, joined the demonstration to express their solidarity in this regard.

Advocate Khokon Saha, general secretary of Narayanganj metropolitan Awami League, said the temple committee used to take care of the endowed property, Lakshminarayan Akhra, and the historical Zeus pond adjacent to the temple in Deobhog area of the city.

“In the CS (British) pamphlet of the land survey, this property was recorded as an endowed property. But after 1975, a local gang began trying to grab the pond. Attempts were also made to seize it by forging documents at different times,” Khokon added.

An endowed property is property donated to Hindu places of worship which cannot be sold or transferred to others, according to the law.

At the event, speakers said family members of Selina Hayat Ivy, including her brother, had occupied the endowed property worth around Tk100 crore through forged documents over a long period of time.

The forged documents of the property include the names of several close relatives of the mayor, including her mother and two brothers. A case filed by the temple authorities to protect the property is ongoing.

Narayanganj district Awami League General Secretary Abu Hasnat Shahid Md Badal demanded that the prime minister and the government immediately hand over the endowed property to the temple committee and remove the illegal structures built on the banks of the Zeus pond.

Nim Chandra Bhowmik, president of Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council and former ambassador to Nepal, said a memorandum would be submitted to the prime minister after compiling a list of people's representatives who had occupied Hindu properties across the country.

He said the temple site in Narayanganj was occupied by Mayor Ivy's relatives. He demanded immediate return of the endowed property to the temple.
