The house of dauntless freedom fighter (FF) Moazzem Hossain, also the second accused in the Agartala Conspiracy Case in 1967, was burnt to ashes in Pirojpur in the early hours of Friday.

Abu Jafar, station officer of Pirojpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that his (Moazzem Hossain) house was gutted in fire at the West Dumritola area under Pirojpur Sadar upazila.

Informed, firefighters along with their three fire extinguisher vehicles rushed to the scene at around 8am and doused the flame with the help of the locals within an hour, he added.

It is primarily assumed that the fire broke out due to electrical short circuit, he said, adding that detailed information will be provided after the proper investigation.

Moazzem Hossain (1933-1971) was a lieutenant commander in the Pakistani Navy. In 1967, he was named second accused in the Agartala conspiracy case following Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Moazzem Hossain also allegedly organized the Bangali personnel in the Pakistan Navy for an insurrection and liberating East Pakistan.

He was killed in his Dhaka home on March 26, 1971, by the Pakistan Army.

Bangladesh Navy base BNS Shaheed Moazzem in Rangamati was named after him on January 16 in 1976. A road ‘Shaheed Lieutenant Commander Moazzem Hossain Sarak’ in the capital was named after him by Dhaka City Corporation.

The valiant freedom fighter was given the Independence Award posthumously in 2012.
