A suspected Rohingya yaba trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Tumbru Baishfari border in Ghumdhum union under Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban.
The deceased is identified as Md Abdur Rahim, 25, son of Wadul Haque from Kutupalong Rohingya camp.
The incident happened around 3:30am on Friday.
Cox's Bazar BGB 34 Captain Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed said: “On a tip-off that a huge consignment of yaba is coming from Myanmar, we took position at the Tumbru Baishfari border.
“When the BGB challenged the group of yaba traders coming from Myanmar, the yaba traders started firing at the patrol team. The patrol team fired back in self defence.”
Abdur sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. Later, he was taken to Ukhia Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the BGB official added.
BGB also seized a homemade two-barreled gun, four rounds of ammunition and 50,000 pieces of yaba worth around Tk1.5 crores from the scene.
