Police arrested a young man from Natore early hours of Thursday on charge of assaulting a traffic police sergeant in Rajshahi.
The arrestee is Belal Hossain, 26, son of Shamsul Haque, hailing from Lakshmipur Bhatapara area of Natore.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police’s (RMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam Ruhul Kuddus, confirmed the information in the morning.
In a joint drive with Natore police, a team of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police arrested Belal from Harishpur Bypass intersection at 1am, he said.
According to previous reports published on Wednesday, a motorcyclist attacked a traffic sergeant, gravely injuring him, because the latter asked the former to show papers of his vehicle, according to police and witnesses.
The incident took place at Bilshimla Oitijhya Chattar in the city on Monday afternoon.
The traffic sergeant, Bipul Bhattarcharja, 32, is currently undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Speaking about the attack, Bipul said: “He [the motorbike driver] became enraged when I asked him to show his papers. He became violent and attacked me.”
Locals, who witnessed the incident, said the sergeant stopped the motorcycle, which had two riders, one of whom was not wearing a helmet, and started to write a case against them. The driver drove the motorbike onto the footpath nearby and started to argue with the traffic police official. At one point, he attacked the sergeant with a wooden stick he found in a furniture store nearby.
When locals in the area gathered around, the motorcyclist duo ran away, leaving the vehicle behind.
Upon receiving information, police rescued the traffic sergeant and took him to the RMCH.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesman Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam Ruhul Kuddus said Bipul had a broken hand and collar bone because of the attack.
“He sustained multiple injuries in other parts of his body as well,” he added.
Rajpara police station OC Majharul Islam said legal action would be taken after consulting the traffic sergeant once he gets better.
In the afternoon, RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique visited the victim in the hospital.
He said the motorcycle of the attacker had been seized and the attacker had been identified as Belal Hossain, resident of Lakshmipur, Bhataria.
He added that the involvement of the second youth was being investigated and he would be arrested soon.
