Unidentified miscreants vandalized idols of Hindu goddesses at a temple in Sadar upazila of Kurigram early Friday.
Shri Pradeep Roy, president of Sri Sri Shitalpat temple committee at Khanpara village, said: “I have been worshipping in this temple for almost two decades. There has never been such an unpleasant incident here in the past. We are shocked! I demand that the perpetrators be identified and brought to justice.”
Shyamal Roy, a resident of the temple area, said after puja on Friday night, someone entered the half-finished, unprotected temple building, and vandalized eight idols.
The next morning, Kamali Rani Das, one of the temple priests, went to the temple and found the idols desecrated. The matter was then reported to the police.
On information, Kurigram Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khan Md Shahriar, along with senior district police officials, visited the spot.
The OC said, “I visited the spot the next day after receiving the news in the afternoon. We are investigating the incident to identify those involved in the vandalism. We hope we can identify those involved and bring them to book soon.”
